マイケル・ラーセン講師は来日して12年。“プリンセス”と呼ぶ奥様はじめ、日本人や日本が大好きと話します。日本に来たきっかけや来日して驚いたこと、英語を学ぶ意義などを聞きました。
――出身地はどんなところでしたか。
I was born in Sacramento, California. It is the capitol of California, but it is not a
big city. It was a nice place to grow up because there are many recreational
opportunities. We had rivers and parks and lakes, and the ocean was not far
away, and people could go skiing and hiking in the mountains.
カリフォルニア州サクラメントで生まれです。カリフォルニア州の州都ですが大都市ではありません。レクリエーションの機会がたくさんあり、成長するのに良い場所でした。川や公園、湖があり、海も遠くなく、山でスキーやハイキングを楽しめました。
――日本に来ることになったきっかけは。
I came to Japan the first time after I graduated from college. I was interested in
Japanese people and their culture and language. I worked with Christian
churches for three years before I went back to America for more education.
大学を卒業してから初めて日本に来ました。日本人とその文化と言語に興味がありました。日本ではキリスト教の教会に3年間勤務して、もっと勉強がしたいと思いアメリカに戻りました。
――初めての日本はどうでしたか。
I was surprised by how crowded it was in the cities but then how beautiful it was
in the countryside. Japan is really green and I enjoy looking at the terraced
landscapes. Also, public transportation is amazing here. And all the elevated
expressways are incredible.
都会が何て混みあっているのだろうと驚き、それから田舎が何て美しいんだろうと驚きました。日本は本当に緑が多く、段々になった風景を眺めるが好きです。また、日本は公共交通機関の発達も驚くばかりです。高架を走る高速道路は信じられないほどです。
――英語教師になろうとしたきっかけは。
After I decided I want to live in Japan, I knew I would be an English teacher. I
enjoy teaching, so this was a really good career choice for me.
日本に住みたいと決心した後で、自分は英語の先生になるだろうと分かっていました。教えることを楽しんでいるので、英語教師の道は私にとって本当に良いキャリア選択だったと思います。
――「日本人の第二言語習得モチベーション」が研究テーマと聞いています。
I have learned that motivation is very, very complex and is always changing.
Every student has their unique combination of motivations that are constantly
growing stronger and weaker. I try to show how English can be useful and
enjoyable for their career and lives so that they will be more motivated to learn
real English.
モチベーションはとてもとても複雑で、しかも常に変化していると学んできました。学生は皆、常に強くなったり弱くなったりする独自のモチベーションの組み合わせを持っています。英語が学生たちのキャリアや生活にいかに役立つものか、そして楽しくしてくれるものかを提示するよう努めています。学生たちが本当の生きた英語を学ぶモチベーションを高めてくれるように。
――日本人は英会話が苦手。克服するコツは。
I would say focus on communication and don’t worry about mistakes because
native English speakers don’t care. Listening and asking questions is good
communication, too, so you don’t have to speak much.
間違うことを心配しないでコミュニケーションに集中することです。英語のネイティブスピーカーは間違ったことを気にしませんから。聞いたり質問したりすることも良いコミュニケーションなので、自分でたくさん話そうとしなくてもいいのです。
――学生たちに伝えていきたいこと、望むことは。
English really is very important in our modern world. Although you might not
need English to be successful in Japan, an ability to understand and speak
English has the potential to improve your life in so many ways, from work to
entertainment like music and games. Take advantage of this time to learn
English as an investment in your future lifestyle.
私たちの現代世界では、英語は本当に非常に重要です。日本で成功するだけなら英語は必要ないかもしれませんが、英語を理解して話す能力は、仕事から音楽やゲームなどの娯楽まで、皆さんの生活をさまざまな方法で改善する可能性を秘めています。この時間を利用して、将来のライフスタイルへの投資として英語を学びましょう。
――本学での教育活動以外の日本での活動は。
I am pastor of the Nagoya Union Church on Sundays and I often do weddings
on Saturdays.
日曜日は名古屋ユニオンチャーチの牧師をしており、土曜日にはよく結婚式を行っています。
――趣味は何ですか。
I run 8 km every morning. I enjoy writing novels, and I have just finished my fifth
novel. I also do a lot of reading and watching things online.
毎朝8キロ走っています。小説を書くのが好きで、5 冊目の小説を書き終えました。
また、オンラインで多くのことを読んだり見たりしています。
――日本在住12年。我ながら日本に染まったなあ、と感じますか。
There is a lot that I appreciate about Japan and I prefer living here. My wife is
Japanese and we have been married for almost 33 years. Not long after we got
married, I felt that I had become half-Japanese, but I will always be half-
American, too.
日本って素晴らしいと感じていることがたくさんあり、今では日本での生活の方が好きになりました。私の妻は日本人で、結婚して33年近くになります。結婚して間もない頃は自分が半分日本人になってしまった気がしました、でも私は常に半分はアメリカ人でもありたい、と思っています。
