――アメリカ合衆国南部のアラバマ州のご出身。どんな所ですか。
Alabama is very rural and conservative. There are many beautiful places to visit throughout the south. In Alabama, we have beautiful hiking trails, lakes, beaches, and foothills to visit. The most famous parts of southern culture are the drawl/accent and food. Alabama is famous for white barbecue sauce, fried chicken, and barbecue. It’s a nice place to visit and very different than the popular tourist destinations.

――どんな子ども時代を過ごしましたか。
Growing up in a town of less than 4,000 people meant that most people knew each other. If I got in trouble at school or did something great, my family knew before I even got home. I learned a lot about cooking, gardening, and farming. But I also traveled a lot and enjoyed visiting museums as a child. I always liked history and paleontology.

――日本に興味をもったきっかけは。
I’ve always found Japan interesting. However, it wasn’t until college that I really became interested in the culture, food, and history. In graduate school, I began studying more about Asian history and immigration. While in graduate school, I traveled to Japan and instantly fell in love with the country.
　私はずっと日本に興味を抱いてきました。でも文化、フード、そして歴史に本当に興味を持ったのは大学に入ってからでした。 大学院ではアジアの歴史と移民についてより深く勉強し始めました。 大学院在学中に日本に旅行し、たちまちこの国に恋しました。

――初めて来日した時の印象は。
When I visited for the first time, I felt at home here. I know that doesn’t make sense because I had never lived here, but it brought a sense of peace to me. The most vivid memories of that trip are the smells of Kyoto (roasting tea and incense) or my experiences with food. I knew that I wanted to live in Japan in the future and made that my goal.
　初めて訪れた時、まるで我が家にいるように感じました。 日本に住んだことはないのにナンセンスだとわかっていますが、安堵感に包まれました。 その時の旅の最も鮮明な思い出は、京都の香り（ほうじ茶と香）あるいは食の体験です。 将来は日本に住みたいと思い、それを目標にしました。

――大学では日本史を専攻した。日本の歴史のどこに惹かれましたか。
Japanese culture has interested me for a long time. I planned to study Latin American history but felt drawn to Asian studies as well. Finally, I discovered a link between Japan and Latin America. I focused my research on Japanese immigration to Peru but studied a lot about other areas of Japanese and East Asian history.
While most people are interested in feudal Japan, I find modern history equally fascinating.
　日本の文化は長い間私に興味を抱かせ続けてきました。ラテンアメリカの歴史を勉強するつもりでしたが、同じようにアジア研究にも惹かれました。そしてついに、日本とラテンアメリカとの接点を見つけました。 私はペルーへの日本人移民に焦点を当てて研究しましたが、日本と東アジアの歴史の他の分野についても多くのことを学びました。
封建時代の日本に興味を持つ人がほとんどですが、私は近代史にも同じくらい魅力を感じます。

――日本人の海外移民がメインテーマなんですね。
I chose this as my theme in graduate school because I was interested in Latin America, Japan, and immigration. Since then, it has evolved into cultural studies of Japanese communities abroad and how immigration and globalization affect businesses. Most of my career has been in technology and education. I’ve applied the ideas I studied and skills I learned to the career I’ve had. While immigration and cultural studies will always be a focus in my research, I’ve also began researching more into technology and social media and the impacts they have on culture.

――学生たちに伝えていきたいこと、学生たちに望むことは。
I want my students to understand that communication is more important than being perfect when using another language or working with other cultures. In my past positions, I worked with many different cultures and personalities. Being able to communicate and try to understand others, made my work easier and more productive.
　他の言語を使用したり、他の文化のもとで仕事をする際には、完璧であることよりもコミュニケーションが重要であると、学生に理解してもらいたいです。 過去の職では、さまざまな文化やパーソナリティの人々と仕事をしてきました。 コミュニケーションを取り、他人を理解できるようになったことで、仕事をより容易に、生産性を向上できるようになりました。

――これからも日本で活躍していきたいそうですね。
I believe that I fit into Japanese culture but can also help foster a mutual cultural understanding. I want to continue working in education and business in Japan and being an active member of my community.
　私は自分が日本の文化に溶け込んでいるだけでなく、相互の文化的理解を促進するのにも役立つことができる、と信じています。 日本で教育とビジネスの仕事を続け、コミュニティの積極的なメンバーであり続けたいと望んでいます。
