グティエレス講師は学生時代に比較文学を研究。その成果は現在の英語教育にも生かされていると話します。比較文学を学んだきっかけや、日本に興味をもった理由などを聞きました。ちなみに一番の趣味はハイキングで、週末にはどこかの山でグティエレス講師に会えるそうです。
――ロサンゼルスの魅力を教えて下さい。
Los Angeles is a city full of possibilities. There are so many things you can do. You can go swimming at the beach, go hiking at the mountains, watch a Broadway show, go to Disneyland, and more. It is very diverse with people from all over the world. You have different parts of Los Angeles like Korean Town, Little Tokyo, and Placita Olvera. You can eat any type of dish from around the world. ロサンゼルスは可能性がいっぱいの街です。できることがたくさんあります。ビーチに泳ぎに行ったり、山にハイキングに行ったり、ブロードウェイでショーを見たり、ディズニーランドに行ったり。世界中から集まる人々で多様性に満ちています。コリアンタウン、リトルトーキョー、プラシタオルベラ（メキシコ街）など、さまざまな場所があり、世界中のどんな料理も食べられます。
――どんな子ども時代を過ごしましたか？
My parents came from Mexico. My sisters and I are first generation born in United States. Both of my parents were factory workers. We lived at a suburb area in Pomona. I had a happy childhood and had friends in my neighborhood. My school did not have much money, so we didn’t have books to study nor a lot of school field trips. Though there was not much money, I still had a very active school life and joined the soccer team.
両親はメキシコ出身で、私たち姉妹はアメリカ合衆国生まれの第一世代です。両親は二人とも工場労働者でした。私たちはポモナの郊外に住み、幸せな子ども時代を過ごし、近所には友達がいました。私の通っていた学校はお金があまりなかったので、教科書も校外学習もあまりありませんでした。それでも、サッカーチームに入ったり、とてもアクティブなスクールライフを送りました。
――学生時代は比較文学を専攻したと聞きました。どんな研究ですか。
Comparative Literature is a study of comparing two novels from two distinct countries in their original language. My major was very difficult to study because many people in the program had to speak 3-5 languages. I studied feminism and minorities in literary writings in Latin America, North America, Japan, and different parts of Europe. I am currently studying International Education in second-language acquisition. I am researching effective pedagogy and policy making in how to improve the English education in Japan from the perspective of overseas teachers.
比較文学は、2つの異なる国の2つの小説を原語で比較する研究です。専攻の研究プログラムでは、3から5の言語を話す必要があるため、非常に難しかったです。私はラテンアメリカ、北アメリカ、日本、そしてヨーロッパ各国の文学作品にみられるフェミニズムとマイノリティの研究をしました。私は現在、第二言語習得の国際教育を研究しています。海外教師の視点から、日本の英語教育をどのように改善するかについて、効果的な教育学と政策立案を研究しています。
――比較文学の研究は現在の英語教師の仕事につながっていますか。
Studying Literature requires people to study reading, writing, grammar, and speaking. Those four skills are also needed when learning a new language. It was natural for me to be an English teacher after studying literature. With a background in Literature, it led me to find creative teaching methods and create discussion/ dialogue with a variety of topics. It is helpful because I can find different approaches to teaching that help students to be motivated and active learners in class.
文学を勉強するには、リーディング、ライティング、文法、スピーキングを学ぶ必要があります。これらの4つのスキルは、新しい言語を学ぶときにも必要です。文学を勉強して英語の教師になるのは自然なことでした。文学というバックグラウンドがあることで、私は創造的な教授法を見つけたり、さまざまな話題で議論/対話を創りだしたりすることができました。学生に授業でやる気を起こさせ、積極的に学習するのに役立つさまざまな教育アプローチを見つけるのに役立っています。
――大学では副専攻が日本研究だったそうですね。
I find Japan fascinating because of their strong sense of storytelling. When I was younger, I often watched Japanese dramas. It was a shock for me to find that the endings are open-ended and bittersweet. The first one I watched was Beautiful Life. I found the drama beautiful, heartfelt, and so sad. That led me to watch more Japanese dramas. Naturally, I also started watching anime.
日本は物語性のセンスが強く、魅力を感じました。若い頃は日本のドラマをよく見ていました。エンディングがどちらとも解釈でき、ほろ苦いことに衝撃を受けました。私が観た最初の一作は「ビューティフルライフ」。そのドラマは美しく、ハートフルで、そしてとても悲しいものでした。それがきっかけで、日本のドラマをもっと観るようになり、自然と日本のアニメも観るようになりました。
――日本で活動することになったきっかけは？
After getting my Master`s degree, I was looking for teaching positions. I learned about the JET Programme from a friend. I thought it was a great opportunity for me to work in Japan to improve my Japanese and to get teaching experience. I really fell in love with Japan. I enjoy the different seasons, hot springs, festivals, and the variety of outdoor activities available in close proximity to the cities. Since my JET experience, I had wanted to continue living in Japan teaching English.
修士号を取得した後、私は教職を探していました。ある友人からJET（The Japan Exchange and Teaching）プログラムを知りました。日本で働き、日本語を上達させ、教育経験を積む絶好の機会だと思いました。私は本当に日本に恋をしました。私はさまざまな季節、温泉、お祭り、そして都市近郊で利用できるさまざまなアウトドアアクティビティを楽しんでいます。JETプログラムを経験してからは日本に住み、英語を教え続けたいと思っています。
――学生たちへメッセージを。
My message for students is to not take things too seriously and take time to take care of yourself both physically and mentally. Do not be shy when you are having a hard time and be brave to voice them to others. People can help you with your problems or be there to listen to them. Do not work too hard, you need to take time for yourself. Work will always be there the next day, and your health needs to be replenished every day. Also, life is not a competition. Everyone had their own pace and time that is perfect for YOU.
物事を深刻に受け止めすぎず、心身ともに自分を大事にするために時間をかけることです。自分が大変なときには恥ずかしがらずに、周りの人に訴える勇気を持ってください。皆さんが抱えている問題に手を貸してくれるか、そばにいて耳を傾けてくれます。あまりのハードワークはやめてください。皆さんは自分自身のために時間をかける必要があります。仕事は翌日も必ずそこにあり、毎日健康を補充する必要があります。そして、人生は競争ではありません。誰もが「自分自身」にぴったりのペースと時間を持っているのですから。
